Position Overview
The Mechanical Engineer designs operating room equipment including structural piece part and subassembly designs, electro-mechanical drive trains, user touch points (patients, physicians, and support staff), and complete systems. Works with other engineering, manufacturing, marketing, quality, and regulatory staff to develop product specifications, prototype units, verification and validation devices, and coordinates production release of new products. In addition, this position performs analysis and testing to assure product performance, reliability, and safety. Plans and schedules projects in a manner consistent with corporate objectives.
Contributes to the intellectual property position of the company via invention and patent application. Identifies and qualifies outside vendors and consultants as required. Maintains current knowledge of competitive technologies including medical, technical, manufacturing, and materials developments as related to company products. Maintains complete, accurate, and timely design history documentation, including testing methods. Provides support for the resolution of product complaints and/or safety issues. Participates in review and disposition of non-conforming material and assemblies.
We are looking for you, if you have the ability to:
- Design metal, plastic, and composite patient support structures for use in operating rooms meeting all requirements for stiffness, strength, stability, reliability and cost.
- Design user actuated mechanisms and electro-mechanical drive trains to articulate these structures to position patients and apply traction as needed to optimize surgical outcomes.
- Work with a diverse group of highly motivated individuals within the mechanical engineering group as well as peers on the electrical, software, systems, manufacturing, clinical, marketing, and service teams.
Here is what you will do day-to-day
- Work independently or within cross functional development teams to fully define user needs and product specifications. Design, develop, and test prototypes and V&V units that meet these specifications.
- Participate with New Product Introduction (NPI) to assure product designs are producible in the Mizuho OSI manufacturing environment at the most favorable costs for the sales volume expected.
- Evaluate field input from Service and Marketing regarding product performance.
- Maintain a continuing liaison relationship with Manufacturing and Marketing functions to assure readiness to meet commitments of new business and to assure that production rates and product designs provide effective utilization of available manufacturing resources.
- Continually reduce product cost through design, process, procedure, and method improvement.
- Collaborate with other engineers within the department and across the organization on mechanical designs and activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems within standard regulations.
- Analyze problems and formulate plans to overcome challenges to get work done quickly with a high degree of quality. Make sound and logical decisions, choose the appropriate courses of action based on the situation, and use continual improvement problem solving skills.
- Understand Mizuho OSl's business objectives and the relationship between the Department and those objectives; to support and follow the Corporate Vision, Mission & Values Statements, to maintain the services and quality levels set by Mizuho OSI, and to continually enable Mizuho OSI to be a great place to work.
- Understand, follow and support Mizuho OSl's internal Quality System policies, procedures and work instructions including but not limited to applicable external regulations (21 Code of Federal Regulations Part 820 Quality System Regulations and applicable International Standards).
- At more senior levels you may:
- Participate in vendor selection, sustaining engineering, QC inspection, and material review board activities.
- Assist other engineers and designers with technical input as necessary.
- Lead projects and provide technical leadership.
- Train and instruct other members of the department and the company as appropriate, by passing along skills and information to assist them in their development and advancement either with one-on-one or with platform training skills.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and 2-5 years of experience. Master’s degree and 1 year of experience.
- Fluency with a 3D solid modeling package, preferably Solid Works. Ability to apply engineering principles using logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to find creative or innovative solutions for design of mechanical parts or assemblies.
- Excellent computer skills including operating Windows based personal computers. Ability to efficiently and effectively use Microsoft products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, MS Project, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to clearly express oneself verbally and in writing in the English language using good grammar, vocabulary, eye contact. Ability to communicate effectively with employees and other business contacts in a courteous and professional manner. Excellent verbal and written communication skills to include strong presentation, project and organizational skills.
- Excellent customer focus with a high sense of urgency. Ability to provide excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

What you need to be prepared for:
- The duties of this job require the employee to stand and to use hands to manipulate very small objects and hand tools for long periods of time. The employee is required to stand, bend and stoop, walk and occasionally to lift up to 45 pounds during the normal course of work.
- Occasionally may use equipment in the machine shop including drill presses, lathes, band saws, grinders, welding equipment, mills, etc. Sound levels may be moderate to high.

Salary range: $102,000- $118,000 DOE + annual potential bonus + comprehensive benefits package
