The Sourcing Engineer is a member of the strategic sourcing group. This position is to create visibility and the facilitation of the Supply Chain Business Plan into the New Product Introduction process, (NPI) and/or current product sustaining meetings and assist in highlighting and working directly with SCM colleagues to provide support, direction, insight to these programs to ensure deliverables are provide as defined by our Design phase plans and SCM Plans.

In this position, the individual will be responsible for providing support in the Strategic Sourcing organization along with the Purchasing organization to establish New Product transitions. This position will support commercial and technical issues and become familiar with the technology and the medical products of Mizuho, OSI, (OSI), as designed and developed by OSI, as surgical tables, soft goods, and accessory instruments.

In addition, the Sourcing Engineer builds global relationships by working directly with various types of suppliers in both direct and indirect commodity markets This individual is responsible for assessing and capturing the technical elements that drives cost of goods by working with engineering and with the SCM team to meet the cost targets and provide insight to opportunities at the Design Reviews and Product Milestone meetings with appropriate management.

Here is what you will do day-to-day:

  • Establish cost targets by early involvement with research and development (R&D), Operations Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance in matching internal requirements with market demand.
  • Facilitate strategies with Engineering, Manufacturing, Logistics, Quality, Finance, and Marketing.
    • Work closely with purchasing, suppliers, finance, and engineering on cost reduction projects; ensures communication of technology roadmaps, trends.
  • Responsible for effectively recommending Strategic Purchasing total cost position to R&D and
  • Apply engineering, manufacturing, and quality expertise to reduce cost, cycle time, and drives innovations.
  • Leverage DFx processes into design and execution in working with R&D engineering requirements and engage those process and practices with third party sourcing.
  • Develop and use new materials and technologies where old commodities may need to be replaced
  • Periodically perform early involvement benchmarks in coordination with strategic sourcing.
  • Support strategic alignment of critical commodities by creating and evaluating complex proposals of suppliers.
  • Will use component and adequacy of accounting/estimating systems and assisting suppliers in developing cost collection and financial accounting systems, in coordination with Strategic Purchasing source board.
  • Support the development of a global supplier base.
  • Develop a project specification with colleagues, often including those from other engineering disciplines
  • In coordination with sourcing analyst, present progress report on material related cost reduction projects.
  • Propose, implement, and reinforce standard materials in cooperation with Engineering, source analyst in the documentation and usage of standardized preferred material/supplier list.
  • Conduct value analysis for products and processes (e.g., supplier workshops/black box redesign).
  • Evaluate the supplier performance from a technical, manufacturing, and quality assurance standpoint in cooperation with the applicable department functions.
  • Perform supplier audits regarding technical, strategic sourcing, manufacturing, and quality assurance capabilities in coordination with the total cost model.
  • Additional experiences in project and process management as well as knowledge in operations, supply chain, industrial engineering, and knowledge or use of financial tools such as costed BOMs, and creation of cost models. (Models may need to be developed if not yet existent.)
  • Individual should have experience in Lean and quality improvement programs such as six sigma.
  • Act as liaison for the Supply Chain team and represent the SCM in programs such as NPI and current product sustaining meetings; assist in highlighting and working directly with SCM colleagues to provide support, direction, insight to these programs to ensure deliverables are provided as defined by the PDP plans and SCM Plans.
  • Will conduct strategic sourcing activities as required, (i.e., just to highlight only a few, sourcing, contracting, and negotiation.)

  • Understand, follow, and support Mizuho OSI’s internal Quality System policies, procedures and work instructions including but not limited to applicable external regulations (21 Code of Federal Regulations Part 820 Quality System Regulations and applicable International Standards).


What you will need to be successful in this role:

  • Experience and education – as outlined below, per job level.
  • A BS/BA in Business Administration, or BSIE in Industrial Engineering and/or MBA or MSIE Operations.
  • Individual must have knowledge of Design for Manufacturing, (DFM), and Design to Cost, (DTC), RoHs, REACH and Statical Quality Control, (SQC).
  • Minimum eight (8) years’ experience in the manufacturing, medical devices preferred, with knowledge of supply chain, product development, quality control, component evaluation, technical writing, CAD knowledge, and commercial documentation.
  • Proficient in using analysis/estimating techniques and methods (e.g., improvement curve analysis, weighted guidelines, returns on investment modeling and statistical estimates).
  • Strong interpersonal, negotiation, and leadership skills required.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with suppliers and internal customers.
  • International experience preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
