Job Summary
The Tax & Staff Accountant is responsible for the company’s multi-state indirect tax lifecycle and corporate jurisdictional compliance, while maintaining core general ledger and fixed asset accounting functions. This role ensures the company remains in "Good Standing" and avoids audit exposure through diligent filing, proactive research, and accurate financial reporting.
Responsibilities:
- Tax Compliance, Strategy & Regulatory Filings
- Sales & Use Tax Management: Prepare and file monthly, quarterly, and annual Sales and Use tax returns for multiple jurisdictions. Perform Use Tax audits on AP and fixed asset purchases to ensure proper accrual and remittance.
- Corporate Governance: Manage the filing of Annual/Biennial Reports with Secretaries of State and oversee the renewal of all municipal and county business licenses.
- Audit & Exemption: Act as the primary point of contact for state and local auditors. Maintain the database of customer tax-exempt certificates and validate their authenticity.
- Process Automation: Maintain and optimize tax software and collaborate with IT to improve data flow from the ERP to tax returns
- General Ledger & Fixed Asset Accounting
- Month-End Close: Prepare and post journal entries to the General Ledger. Perform monthly reconciliations for cash, prepaid expenses, liabilities, deferred revenue, and other assigned accounts.
- Fixed Asset Management: Record asset additions, disposals, and monthly depreciation. Ensure assets are classified correctly for both financial reporting and potential property tax implications.
- Lead the annual physical inventory of fixed assets. Coordinate with department heads to locate assets, tag new equipment, and identify obsolete or missing items for "book-to-physical" adjustments.
- Perform special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3+ years of professional accounting experience, with at least 2 years specifically focused on multi-state Sales & Use Tax compliance.
- Proficiency in Excel with the ability to use VLOOKUP, Pivot Tables, and data filters to reconcile thousands of transactions.
- Practical understanding of generally accepted accounting principles.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with a strong attention to detail.
- Analytical mindset with problem-solving abilities and the capacity to make sound decisions.
- Ability to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently while ensuring accuracy and compliance.

Pay Scale: $86,000- $95,000 + potential annual bonus + comprehensive benefits package
